XXIV Edition Edebé Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature

Jordi Sierra i Fabra & Luis Leante, winners of 2016 edebe awards

Jordi Sierra i Fabra (Barcelona, 1947), with a work named El aprendiz de brujo y Los Invisibles (The sorcerer’s apprentice and the invisible ones), & Luis Leante (Caravaca de la Cruz – Murcia, 1963), with the work, Huye sin mirar atrás (Run away without looking back), were yesterday nominated as the brand new winners of the Edebé Children & Young-adult literature awards, respectively.

In El aprendiz de brujo y Los Invisibles, Sierra i Fabra (Spanish National Award winner and twice candidate to the Andersen Awards) has outdone himself with his usual very accurate and precise control of the narrative structure, and at the same time with an unrecognizable surprising style, tells the adventure of a child who goes back to life with an elixir and, thanks to his friends, does justice.

On the other hand, the narrative voice of a teenager, who addresses his dead father in a need to recover his memory, allows the reader of Huye sin mirar atrás to be mesmerized by an exciting adventure in which the boy will be involved. A gender fiction, incredibly well written, that captures the reader both for the trim originality as well as the realism of the main character's maturity process.

Three hundred and twenty-five original works from all around the country and also from different Latin-American countries, confirm once again the importance of edebe’s awards. Most of the winning works have, after publication, obtained additional national and international recognitions (Spanish National award, different critics awards, White Ravens distinctions, CCEI recognitions, Banco del Libro de Caracas awards, Cervantes Chico, CLIJ, Serra d’or, etc) and there is the feeling, among writers, that winning the edebe award means you finally reached the major league of young-adult's literature. In fact, the well-known writer Care Santos said it last year when she received the award and Luis Leante owned he had the same feeling yesterday in an interview.

Edebé Awards are gifted with 55.000 Euros (30.000 Euros for the Young adult and 25.000 Euros for the children winner). Last year winners were Rodrigo Muñoz Avia, with El signo prohibido (The forbidden sign) and Care Santos, with Mentira (Lie). Check full list of previous winners.

Books will be published next March, just before Bologna book fair.
